about the city
Pilsen is located one hour from Prague in the foothills of the Šumava mountains in the west of the Czech Republic. The city is home to one of our faculties of medicine, and also hosts the University of West Bohemia. Our Faculty of Medicine in Pilsen offers undergraduate medical and dentistry studies and a variety of postgraduate programmes based at the new Biomedical Centre, affiliated to the University Hospital. Pilsen is the fourth largest city in the Czech Republic and is famous for its world-renowned Pilsner beer and brewery as well as its historical monuments. Pilsen was awarded the title of the European Capital of Culture in 2015, which helped promote and establish various cultural events in the region.
The affluence of foreign employees and students has made Pilsen an international city where you can find almost anything from quality education to fine entertainment. There’s also lots to see: the historic Pilsen underground, St. Bartholomew’s Cathedral, Náměstí Republiky, the Great Synagogue, the George Patton Memorial Museum, Techmania Science Centre, the Museum of West Bohemia and DEPO2015 - home to the Centre for Creative Business. The city boasts modern leisure facilities, cafés, bars and restaurants. Keen travellers will appreciate how close Pilsen is to the border with Germany.
